Have you ever wanted to complain about something... but then just let it go?
Whenever I experience something that is annoying, unfair, or just Not Right, I usually say "I am going to
write a letter" of complaint but then I never do. Today was different and I am kind of pleased with myself for being a good citizen.
This morning as I entered Loop 410 East near IH-10, I merged into traffic behind a truck of some sort. I soon noticed newspapers lifting merrily into the air out of the top of the truck and raining down on the oncoming traffic one big sheet at a time. Then out came a few small tree branches with leaves attached, then more newspapers.
Seeing the potential for an accident and being annoyed with the littering taking place, I moved into the next lane and tried to pass the truck but he was going too fast for me. I also wanted to see the company name on the truck. I got the truck number and then as the truck slowed down to exit at 281 I saw that this was a City of San Antonio Solid Waste disposal vehicle. Our very own city taxes hard at work going down the drain!
OK, so they are picking up trash and disposing of it but in the process they are leaving part of it on our roadways! Grrr. A really pretty ugly sight for the citizens of San Antonio and for visitors to our wonderful city!
If you ever see something like this and want to complain, call 311, give them all the details, and you will be glad you did. I know I'm glad I did!!!

Hi Shirley, I'm glad you called to complain, and how could the driver not see what was happening from the side mirrors! Hopefully they will do a better job, cover the load and keep San Antonio from litter! Good Job Citizen Shirley!!
Way to go Shirley, helping to keep our beautiful city beautiful!! I get so irritated at litter too..Have a great weekend!
Hi Mary, I wish more people would complain about things like this!
Jeanna, Our city has so much history and is such a wonderful place to live. I hate seeing our roadways littered.
Gosh, not to mention the serious DANGER of the front page of a newspaper landing on someone's windshield....image in the lawsuit the taxpayers would have to pay for that!
Shirley - What? I thought I trained you better? You're supossed to swirve In his direction, shoot him not one, but TWO birds AT the same time.. AKA: Double Birdy. When he recovers from your behavior, stare him down with that very serious look on your face.. Your hair will fly in the wind btw. This is all part of the effect.
He will turn around and pick up all debris. Promise.
Sheila, Exactly what I was thinking. What if one of those papers lands on my windshield and totally obstructs my vision! Yikes! I want to live to a very old age before I enter the pearly gates!
The Nino technique! Haha... The thought entered my mind. When I was able to pull up even with him I gave my very best glare but he wasn't even looking. He was probably totally unaware of the swath of ugliness he had left in his wake...
Shirley - I was in San Antonio for a wedding last year and it is a beautiful and clean city. I am glad you took the time to report him.
Hi Sharon, Thanks for the compliment about San Antonio. I'm glad you got a chance to visit!
Shirley, I have to be honest I'm not familar with 311. What happens when you call?
... the Double Birdy sounds viable in this case ...
..... or maybe your call was just as good ;o)
Howdy there Shirley
I'm sure proud of you my friend.
More folks should take the time to report things like that!
Sure don't need the folks working for the City going around littering the rodeways.
I'll be doing a post about Deb, writing a letter to the Selectmen's of Charlestown.
HI SP! Ahhh, the irony of who was coming down the road & littering @ the same time. GLad you found out who thy were & called!
Good for you Shirley! It makes you feel good, doesn't it?
Marchel, First I googled City of San Antonio Solid Waste and called the number on the website. The man who answered told me he would transfer me to 311, which he did, and if I ever needed to call again to just dial 311. I think it is a number for the city.
Hi Sheldon, Probably calling in with a complaint trumps a Double Birdy!
Hi Dale, I can't wait to read about that!
Hi Kristin, That was pretty ironic... LOL!
Hi Ricki, Yes it did, especially since I always just threaten to do it and then never do... :o)
Pretty common sense to know that light weight things will fly out of an open bed. Wonder what the collectors response to the complaint will be... WA state passed a law that all loads have to be covered now. There were too many horrific accidents from "things" falling onto the freeway.
Shirley I don't usually like to complain ever but your 311 idea in this case makes sense. Where is the common sense?
Sarah, That should be a law everywhere. I'm sure if a policeman had come along, the driver would have been pulled over.
Gary, Maybe the result will be one less driver doing something that endangers others.
LOL @Shirley....maybe the waste trucks should start putting an 800# on their trucks, instead of "How's My Driving" ` "How's My Littering". Go get 'em tiger ;-)
Terrible, I hope they had a talk with that driver.
Haha, Gail... At least the truck number was very visible on the back. Maybe one of those How's My Driving? numbers one be a good thing. Or maybe "Call 210-xxx-xxxx if you see me littering!"
I am hopeful that will happen Angelia. I don't want him to get in trouble but to just think about what he is doing... or not doing.
Shirley
I had never heard of the 311 but you always do come up with the most interesting tidbits. I'll remember!
Good for you Shirley. Many would have ignored it.
Good for you, Shirley! Maybe they will be more cognizant of what they're doing from now on!
Debi
Hi Trey, 311 may only work in San Antonio but it's worth a try.
Hi John, You know what they say, "Don't Mess With Texas!"
Yes Debi, What if we performed our jobs in this sloppy manner. Yikes!
Howdy there Shirley
Just stoped by to let you know that I wrote and posted, that post about Deb's letter to the Charlestown Selectman.
Hi Dale, Ok, I will go over and read it now....
Shirley you are a hero. Maybe all of us need to report an incident when something can be corrected. Thanks for the 311 number I didn't know that. Is that just for S.A. or would it also apply in Comal County, does anyone know?
Good for you! I wonder how many other people saw what was happening and didn't call? You did the right thing and maybe even will keep someone from being in an accident. Imagine if that hit your windshield, what would have happened.
