San Antonio Neighborhoods ~ King William
The King William National Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. It carries much historical and cultural importance and is protected by city ordinances.
A little bit of history: The King William area was originally farmland, owned by the Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) and irrigated by acequias flowing from the San Antonio River. By the early 1800's the missions were fully secularized, and the farmland was bought, sold, and divided into tracts by land speculators beginning in the 1840's.
One of the earliest settlers was Carl Guenther, a German immigrant who built the Pioneer Flour mill on the lower San Antonio River. Other German immigrants discovered the area and began building mansions in the Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italian architectural styles. Ernst Altgelt, the first resident to build on King William Street, is said to have named the street after King Wilhelm I of Prussia.
As of today the most expensive home listed in the MLS for King William is a 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath, 6568 sf home built in 1893 listed at $2,680,000. The home is a .63 acre compound on the banks of the San Antonio River. According to the listing, it has a main house, a large guest home and separate studio. There are extensive patios, a pool, and an outdoor kitchen. (It is not the house shown below.)

Howdy there Shirley
There sure are some real fine sounding architectural styles in the King William neighborhood. You've doing a mighty fine series.
Shirley
This may well be the prettiest grouping of homes in San Antonio. Khris and I just drove around for hours gawking !
How many acres do you get for 2.6 million dollars? Sounds like a lot of house though, but I would call the guest house the kids' room and the silence at times would be well worth the 2.6 million. (LOL)

Thanks Dale, I appreciate the comment.
Hi Trey, I love looking at beautiful old homes.
Hi Todd, I forgot the acreage until I read your comment so I went back and edited the post. .63 acres. LOL at your comment...
Shirley - We also love to look at all the older homes. I remember we spent a whole weekend one time when we went to New Orleans driving and looking at all the old mansions. Oh what history. So glad to see the King William area so well preserved.
Hi C&C, Yes, King William is very well preserved and protected from being modernized.
Shirley - nice area. Historical neighborhoods seem to always be in demand. Is the highest priced set back too far to get a shot? I assume the one you have is typical of the area.
Hi Sharon, The one I showed is one I already have and haven't had a chance to get down there to take a shot of the one listed. (I think copying photos off MLS is not kosher so I didn't.)
Hi Shirley, Another interesting history! I love the photo in your post, that is a great looking home.
