Buyer Plans of the Baby Boom Generation

I recently read about an AARP poll that found that  26% of baby boom generation households expect to move sometime in the near future.  The want to move from their present home to a single-level home, citing comfort and convenience as motivating factors.  From my experience most people in this age group say they want a one story home.  My husband and I have already taken that step and moved from a two story to a one story home a few years ago.

Many people said that when they move they will look for a better house or better climate, or move closer to family.  I see this a lot with buyers I talk to who want to be near their children and grandchildren or who want to move back to the area where their families are living.

Shirley, I have found a lot of baby boomers who only want a one story home.  Can't say that I blame them but I LOVE my home, neighborhood, yada, yada, yada so will continue trudging up those stairs.

Marchel, We like our one story house. It's in the same neighborhood as our other house.

Shirley, my clients are almost 100% Baby Boomers. Most are moving to Delaware because

  • it is still close to home and the grandkids
  • the taxes are much lower than NJ, NY, MD and other states in the area
  • Coastal Delaware has the beach, historic towns and new home communities

When reading reports like the one you cited by AARP, we have to remember that each area is different. For Delaware, such a small state in the midst of perhaps the most populated region in the country, the percentage of Boomers moving here from surrounding states is probably much higher than states out west. We have also had many buyer clients that were moving back to this area after a career of moves that took them away from family and friends.
